Sekerpare is a good solution, when you want to prepare something sweet, fast and easy but still special. It’s not a good idea though if you bring it when you are visiting Greeks (from my own experience). I was hoping they wont find out… didn’t work… But it’s definitely unique! I got the recipe from a friend, who has a Turkish husband. The recipe is Turkish but you will find similar sweets in the whole Mediterranean area. Most of them are prepared with semolina. I do it my way: with only wholemeal flour and I also add vanilla to the dough and cinnamon to the syrup.
Ingredients:
- 250 gr butter
- 2 tbsp powdered sugar
- 4 eggs
- 2 cup flour (I used wholemeal flour)1 tsp baking powder
- appr. 50 almonds(I also put vanilla extract)
- Syrup:
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 cups water
- some lemon juice
- cinnamon
Method
Mix the butter with powdered sugar and the eggs. Slowly add the flour. You will get a very soft light brown dough. Put aside for 15 minutes. I used fresh almonds so I poured boiling water on them and peeled them. Preheat the oven to 200 C. Roll small balls from the dough, put one almond to the top of them and press lightly. Place them on a tray with baking paper on it. You will get around 50 balls.
Bake them for approximately 20-25 minutes until they are light brown.
In the meanwhile, boil the syrup ingredients for 15 minutes and put aside. Let it cool down. With a spoon, pour warm syrup over hot (freshly) baked Sekerpare. Repeat this a few times and let them soak. Let it cool down a little before you serve, otherwise the syrup will burn your lips.(from own experience too...)
