Kyrenia (Greek: Kerýneia; Turkish: Girne) is a small city on the northern coast of Cyprus. Although it has been under Turkish control since the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, internationally it is recognized as part of the Republic of Cyprus. Once predominantly inhabited by Greek Cypriots, it is now populated by Turkish Cypriots and settlers from Turkey. The city has a 6000 year long history, unique remains of countless civilisations, miles of natural beaches, calm sea, and a mild climate. You can find out more about the history of the town here. It has a charming tiny harbour, full of yachts and fishing boats which is framed by the colossal hulk of its Crusader castle. With the mountains in the background and the calm sea in front, the harbour has a magnificent atmosphere. The Castle houses a museum containing the remains of the world''s oldest shipwrecks. Lot of Greek Cypriots refuse to go to the areas occupied by the Turkish troops and others do go there but just to visit. They don’t spend money and don’t go shopping. We do the same, we don’t spend money in the north of Cyprus with some exceptions... |
